Daily Cover: Garrison Starr meets Joey Ryan’s “Broken Headlights”

24 Aug

I was really excited to see Garrison Starr do a cover of Joey Ryan’s “Broken Headlights” for The Voice Project. I remember the first time I heard the song live at Hotel Cafe by Joey and it instantly became one of my favorite songs. It’s a simple song, but so beautifully written with sincerity and emotion. A few weeks ago, I saw Garrison Starr at Hotel Cafe and she covered this song, and I’m glad you all get a chance to hear her beautiful rendition.

Enjoy.

New Music Video: Cary Brothers – “GhostTown”

27 Jun

Under Control by Cary Brothers is one of my favorite albums of 2010. The album is filled with emotions and is lyrically on point.  The album is Cary’s strongest to date, showing immense growth and maturity since his introduction with “Blue Eyes”. There are many great tracks on the album, including the title track, “Under Control”, “Something About You” with Laura Jansen, “Alien” and the incredible “Ghost Town”. (Here is a full review of the album)

There is finally a video for the lead single, and one the standout tracks on the album, “Ghost Town”. And it was worth the wait. It combines live action and animation in a creative and artsy display. This is an awesome video, and the song is equally fantastic. Great work Cary Brothers. Check out the insanely cool video:

Daily Cover: Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale meet Cary Brothers’ “Ghost Town”

25 May

Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale are two musicians I recently discovered. I saw them open for Cary Brothers a few months ago, and was really impressed by their skills and vocals. They had killer harmonies and are true singer-songwriters.

Joey and Kenneth opened for Cary Brothers and during their set, they covered Cary Brothers’ current single, “Ghost Town”, and it was amazing. It is a great song, very well written, and I really like the original. In fact, Cary Brothers’ new album, Under Control, is one of my favorites at the moment and has been for the last two months. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please do so.

I hear that the music video for the lead single, “Ghost Town” is incredible and will be released soon. As I patiently wait, check out a free track from the album by subscribing to his mailing list below. And f you like the song, check out the album. My favorite songs on the album are “Ghost Town”, “Alien”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, and the amazing duet with Laura Jansen, “Something About You”. Daily Cover: Cary Brothers and Laura Jansen meet Level 42’s “Something About You”

14 May

“Something About You” by Cary Brothers and Laura Jansen is a perfect example of a great cover song. They took a bad/ok song and turned it into something amazing and special. It is one of my favorite tracks on Cary Brothers’ latest album, Under Control. They took a song from 1985, that in my opinion is horrible, and turned it into a great romantic ballad. The original by Level 42 may have been good at the time, but is very dated and uninspiring. To their credit, the original did chart well, reaching #6 in the UK, and #7 in the US.

I was very impressed by Cary Brother and Laura Jansen’s duet, and was actually surprised it was a cover when reading the album liner. They really put their all into the song. I looked up the original by Level 42, and it sounds completely different. The cover version takes a completely different spin on the song, turning the 80’s electro-pop song into a lovely ballad. I prefer Cary Brothers and Laura Jansen’s version, no contest. I love the harmonies, and it looks like the song may have a special meaning for the two. Their version is so different and good that it is almost as if the original never existed. I’m glad Cary Brothers and Laura Jansen took the original and improved it.

Take a listen to the album cut, the original by Level 42, and an amazing performace from Cary Brothers’ album release at The Hotel Cafe recently.
