New Live Track: Kenneth Pattengale – “Charlie” (live from McCabe’s Guitar Shop)

29 Jun

“Charlie” by Kenneth Pattengale is a touching, heart-warming, and funny song that I really enjoy. In the song, Kenneth is singing to and giving advice to his daughter Charlie, err, his yet unborn daughter Charlie. The lyrics of the song are very sweet, endearing and touching:

“come to me with problems, I swear, I won’t go try to solve ‘em
I’ll only tell you everything I know
like standing tall was all I had
like boys are bad and love’s a fad
that no one ever learns to just let go

Charlie, there’s just one little thing before we meet some lovely spring
I have to go and you find you a nice momma
she’ll be just like me and you, perfect in just what we do
a love as strong as father and his daughter”

Kenneth is releasing a live performance of the song on iTunes and Amazon today. The live version was recorded at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica this past April, and features Joey Ryan on guitar and additional vocals.

I had the opportunity to see Kenneth and Joey perform this beautiful song at HotelCafe a few months ago, and it was beautiful. They will be playing a show at HotelCafe on the 22nd of July. It was the first time I heard Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, and I instantly knew this song was special. The lyrics and sentiment of the song are very sincere and touching. You can feel the love between Kenneth and Charlie, (which is a bit odd and creepy). The live recording of the song is great and I recommend you download it, it’s only 99 cents.

Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan are doing several shows in LA aside from the HotelCafe date, and are touring the Mid West soon – be sure to catch them when they come to a city near you. You can check out the full list of dates here.

Here is a clip of another live performance of “Charlie”. If you enjoy it, get the mp3 here.

Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan also recorded an amazing version of “GhostTown” by Cary Brothers. Check out the video and their killer harmonies here.

New Music Video: Sara Bareilles – “King of Anything” on iTunes

29 Jun

Sara Bareilles is back, and judging from her first single, “King of Anything”, she is ready to top the charts once again. Sara is also angry, or at least expresses some anger in the song in her own style – with subtle yet sharp lyrics. The song is the lead single from Sara’s album, Kaleidoscope Heart, which will be released on the 7th of September.

The music video was released on iTunes today – take a look here. You can also download the single, and pre-order the album. If you’re hesitating (I don’t know why), here’s a sneak peak of the video and the making of:

The video will soon be released on VEVO, but here is the audio. Take a listen and share your thought.

New Music Video: Marina And the Diamonds – “Oh No!”

28 Jun

Marina & the Diamonds just released the video for her fourth single, “Oh No!”. The single will be released in the UK on the 26th of July. The song is from Marina’s debut album, The Family Jewels, which reached the #5 position in the UK albums chart, and is climbing the charts in the US.

I haven’t had a chance to write about Marina & The Diamonds, but her album, The Family Jewels, is great. It is one of my favorite albums of the year; I find myself listening to it all the time. The album is super quirky and fun and it really deserves a full review, but for now, it’s great!  There is not a single track I dislike. The opening track is a song called “Are You Satisfied?”, and I am more than satisfied.

Marina has a unique and distinct voice and singing style, similar to Shakira with a hint of Gwen Stefani. Marina’s songs are not only fun and upbeat, but they have a great message and great lyrics. My favorite lyric from the album is actually from the current single “Oh No!”, and it’s, “TV taught me how to feel, now real life has no appeal”. I think that line is brilliant from a great song.

Here is the video for “Oh No!”. If you like it, I highly recommend checking out her album, The Family Jewels. (My favorite tracks include, “I Am Not a Robot”, “Hollywood”, “Are You Satisfied?”, “Obsessions”, “Numb” and “Shampain”.)

Marina is doing a few shows in the States, check her out if you get a chance, dates are listed on her website. (The show in LA is sold-out, which I’m personally bummed as I didn’t snag a ticket.)

Marina also did an amazing cover of Paolo Nutini’s song, “Candy”. Check it out here.

Daily Cover: Robyn meets Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart”

28 Jun

There aren’t too many artists that can pull off an Alicia Keys cover, in my opinion. This cover by Robyn is an exception, even with the lyrical flub. I would not have expected this from Robyn, but then again, she is unconventional, which is what I like about her. She has her own style, and it works with this songs and arrangement. She is also a great singer, which I think gets overlooked in her music sometimes. I like this song and think it is one of the better covers from Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

New Music Video: Cary Brothers – “GhostTown”

27 Jun

Under Control by Cary Brothers is one of my favorite albums of 2010. The album is filled with emotions and is lyrically on point.  The album is Cary’s strongest to date, showing immense growth and maturity since his introduction with “Blue Eyes”. There are many great tracks on the album, including the title track, “Under Control”, “Something About You” with Laura Jansen, “Alien” and the incredible “Ghost Town”. (Here is a full review of the album)

There is finally a video for the lead single, and one the standout tracks on the album, “Ghost Town”. And it was worth the wait. It combines live action and animation in a creative and artsy display. This is an awesome video, and the song is equally fantastic. Great work Cary Brothers. Check out the insanely cool video:

Get yourself a digital copy of Under Control for $5. And check out Cary Brothers website for tour dates, he is amazing live.
