Daily Cover: Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale meet Cary Brothers’ “Ghost Town”

25 May

Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale are two musicians I recently discovered. I saw them open for Cary Brothers a few months ago, and was really impressed by their skills and vocals. They had killer harmonies and are true singer-songwriters.

Joey and Kenneth opened for Cary Brothers and during their set, they covered Cary Brothers’ current single, “Ghost Town”, and it was amazing. It is a great song, very well written, and I really like the original. In fact, Cary Brothers’ new album, Under Control, is one of my favorites at the moment and has been for the last two months. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please do so.

Here is Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale doing an acoustic cover of Cary Brothers“Ghost Town”:

New Remix: Alicia Keys and Drake – “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)”

19 May

Alicia Keys just released the official remix for “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” which includes a verse from Drake, who co-wrote and provides backing vocals on the original album/single version. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the song when I first heard it, but it has grown on me. The remix isn’t too exciting, but the song is still great.

I do really like the video, which you can see here. I think the video is one of my favorite music videos by Alicia Keys.

What do you think of the video?

Daily Cover: Sugababes meet Florence And The Machine’s “Rabbit Heart”

19 May

Lungs by Florence + The Machine is such a great album and “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” is a great track from the album. As for the Sugababes – I like some of their songs, but not all of the songs, and am always confused as to who is in the band, as they seem to rotate a bit.

While they are not my favorite UK girl group, but I did enjoy their cover of “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” as performed on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. I love all the instruments used in the performance, especially the harp. The harp sounds amazing at the beginning and the end of the song! Sugababes vocals are pretty good too, especially some of the harmonies. I like the vibe of the cover, it is very chill and mellow. I like the original, but also like the cover.

Tristan Prettyman – “Madly” Live

18 May

“Madly” by Tristan Prettyman is a song I instantly loved upon first hearing. It is catchy and clever, with a killer chorus that gets stuck in my head all the time. Tristan has released two albums, TWENTYTHREE in 2005, and 2008’s Hello…x, and is currently working on her third album.

Tristan is a very talented acoustic/folk/singer-songwriter, who writes and plays her own tunes. I have both her albums and enjoy them, but they apparently don’t do justice to her live performances. Her Live Sessions EP is really great. She is really talented and I hope more people are exposed to her music and talents.

I haven’t been able to see her play, but hopefully that will change this friday night, when she will be playing with The Makepeace Brothers (who I have seen live and they sound great and are super fun) at The Stronghold in Venice, CA.

Take a listen to “Madly” and introduce yourself to Ms. Tristan Prettyman.

Daily Cover: Boyce Avenue meets Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love”

18 May

Many covers of “Bleeding Love” just don’t work. It is a great song penned by Ryan Tedder, and with Leona Lewis‘ vocals, the song was the vehicle that launched Leona’s worldwide career. It is also a contemporary karaoke favorite, and almost certain for negative comparison. But I found a cover I actually like by Boyce Avenue.

Boyce Avenue is a rock/pop trio of brothers from Florida that is ready to release their debut album, All We Have Left, on June 15. They remind me of Lifehouse. I’ve only heard a few of their songs and I like it, they have talent and potential. Their cover of “Bleeding Love” did surprise me, it is actually very good. The cover is very simple and plain, which works. It is just lead singer, Alejandro Manzana and a guitar. It is raw, unpolished, and it works. It is a tough song to sing, especially for a guy, but Alejandro pulls it off. Take a listen and let us know what you think.
