Nikola Rochelle – “Don’t Talk About This Love” & cover by Cheryl Cole

26 Feb

Nikola Rochelle is the younger sister of Daniel Bedingfield and Natasha Bedingfield. In 2006 she digitally released an EP called Don’t Talk About This Love, which had three songs including the title track.

The song “Don’t Talk About This Love” was covered by Cheryl Cole and is on her amazing debut album, 3 Words. The two versions are so different and so unique for each singer. Nikola’s version is very bare and acoustic, which is what I would expect after listening to the few songs on her myspace and taking into account her siblings and their musical style. Cheryl’s version on the other hand is a bit faster and has more of an edge. It is still a ballad, but has a back beat and more of an RnB vibe.

Take a listen to both version -

Daniel Bedingfield Meets The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me”

25 Feb

Before there was Natasha Bedingfield, there was Daniel Bedingfield. Daniel Bedingfield is the older brother of Natasha Bedingfield, and a musician in his own right. He released his first album, Gotta Get Thru This in 2002. The album reached the #2 spot on the charts and spawned the hit singles, “Gotta Get Thru This”, and “If You’re Not The One”. In 2006 he released his second album, Second First Impression. It peaked at #8 on the UK charts, but was not released in the US. While Daniel Bedingfield has been busy writing, recording and producing music, he has not released any new material since 2006. Hopefully that will change in 2010 as I’m a fan of Daniel and am ready to see what he has concocted in the last four years.

For a BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge session Daniel did an amazing rendition of “Somebody Told Me” originally done by The Killers. It is one of my favorite covers. He takes a well known song, completely changes it up, adds his own style, and completely owns the song. This does what I think all covers should strive to do. Take a listen:

Ellie Goulding – “Starry Eyed”

25 Feb

Ellie Goulding. Remember that name, as I suspect we will be hearing a lot from this 23 year old. She is about to launch what will surely be a massive career. Ellie Goulding is a touted as the next big thing in the UK music scene, having won both the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and Critics’ Choice Award at the Brit Awards a few weeks ago. (Previous winners of the Sound of 20XX poll include Little Boots in 09, Adele in 08, Mika in 07, and Corinne Bailey Raein 06 -- those are some big shoes to fill, but Ellie is headed in the right direction).  Ellie Goulding is getting ready to release her highly anticipated debut album, Lights, in the UK next Monday, the first of March.

“Starry Eyed” is the second single from the album and was released last Monday. The song is already gaining massive air-play and here is the music video:

I really like the song. It manages to be a great pop song, dance song, a bit singer-songwriter/folk-ish, while not being too much of one genre. Ellie Goulding has a definite style. While the song is electronic and very produced, Ellie did an amazing acoustic version for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, which is phenomenal. She proves that she is not only a talented guitar player, songwriter, but also a talented singer.

Ellie Goulding is super talented. She plays the guitar, writes her own songs, and is an amazing singer. Ellie also recently co-wrote two songs with Diana Vickers for Diana’s upcoming album, including a catchy quirky tune called “Jumping Into Rivers” which was available on Diana’s website. I am excited to hear Lights and all the amazing work this talented youngster is going to accomplish.

Ellie Goulding. Remember that name.

Girls Can’t Catch – “Keep Your Head Up”

24 Feb

Girls Can’t Catch is potentially a great, fresh, and excited girl group from the UK. I say potentially because the three girls are very different and were formed in the group, which is not necessarily a bad thing, it has worked before, but I’ve only heard a few tracks and need to hear more. The three members are Diazy Agnew, Jess Stickley, and Phoebe Brown. Phoebe was on X-Factor a few years ago as a member of Hope, another band that was put together for the show.

Girls Can’t Catch have released two singles, which have done well, but haven’t made a significant impact on the charts. Despite having released two singles, numerous tv appearances, and gigs/tours, the group hasn’t released a full album yet. They have had two singles, two other tracks they’ve been known to perform, and a few covers. An album from the girls is long overdue, and the fact that they haven’t released one is somewhat troubling. The girls can sing and harmonize, and hopefully they will be given a chance to prove themselves as a group.

While I don’t like the name of the group, the songs are indeed very catchy. Their first single is a really interesting and odd song called “Keep Your Head Up”. I didn’t like it at first, but slowly it grew on me. The pace of the song fluctuates and is all over the place, but it works as a pop song. I really like the chorus, it’s super catchy and fun.

The song is really produced and has a bit too much going on, but the girls released an acoustic version which is often stuck in my head. It was only after hearing the acoustic version that I that song grew on me. I prefer this stripped down acoustic version -- it really makes the melody and vocals stand out. Check out this version of the song:
